This course explores the importance of understanding child development to enable us to effectively support children’s developmental journey.

Keeping it Simple: Observation, Assessment and Planning


The key message about observation, assessment and planning is about reducing paperwork and remembering quality over quantity in relation to observations. How can this be practically achieved in practice? What is good practice for observation, assessment and planning? What is the significance of the enabling environment? What makes a quality observation? All this and more will be explored during this course.

• To identify what defines quality observations and how to ensure consistency of quality throughout the setting.

• To consider planning that reflects children’s needs and is responsive to the children and involves all staff, including in the moment planning overview

• To explore how to reduce the burden on practitioners in this area and look at how it can be kept simple.
